## Executive GIST (TL;DR)
- The American Heart Association (AHA) and the National Football League (NFL) awarded two $500 **NFL PLAY 60** grants to Eastern Washington elementary schools through the AHA’s school programs, Kids Heart Challenge and American Heart Challenge. - Lind Elementary in Lind, Wash., received an **NFL PLAY 60 Active Recess Grant** to buy equipment and enhance recess activity options. - Herian Elementary in Cusick, Wash., received an **NFL PLAY 60 Flag Football Equipment Grant** to expand access to flag football and support student engagement and confidence. - The grants are part of an annual $350,000 funding pool provided by the NFL via NFL PLAY 60 to support school-identified needs such as recess enhancements, equipment, inclusive PE and FLAG football. - The AHA highlights that about **1 in 5 children** in the U.S. live with obesity and that a similar proportion meet the recommended 60 minutes of daily physical activity; the grants aim to increase opportunities for youth to be active. - Educators at both schools noted the grants will introduce new activities, expand programming in a rural setting, and help students become more active and confident. - NFL PLAY 60 encourages at least 60 minutes of vigorous daily activity and ties into the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans. - The initiative also leverages NFL mascot ambassadors to inspire movement; the current ambassador class is listed in the source. - Grant applications are accepted year-round; more information is available at heart.org/jointhechallenge. Contact details for media and public inquiries were provided in the source.

To support student health and well-being across Washington, the American Heart Association and the National Football League (NFL) recently awarded two grants through the Association’s school-based programs, Kids Heart Challenge™ and American Heart Challenge™. Lind Elementary School in Lind, Wash., received an NFL PLAY 60 Active Recess Grant, while Herian Elementary School in Cusick, Wash., received an NFL PLAY 60 Flag Football Equipment Grant. Each grant provides the respective school $500 to help purchase equipment that supports student physical activity. “Our students are always eager to get outside and move, and this grant will help us introduce new equipment and activities that make recess even more engaging,” said Alan Field, P.E. teacher at Lind Elementary School. “We know when kids have fun opportunities to play, they naturally become more active, and we’re excited to bring even more options to our school community.” “As a school serving a small rural district, we work hard to create a variety of opportunities for students to stay engaged both in and out of the classroom,” said Lynne Richmond, P.E. teacher at Herian Elementary School. “This grant helps us expand access to flag football and gives more students the chance to be active, build confidence and experience the benefits that physical activity can bring to their overall well-being.” This is the third round of grants awarded this year from the $350,000 annual funding pool provided by the NFL through NFL PLAY 60, a campaign supported by the American Heart Association to improve the health of young people by getting them active for at least 60 minutes every day. NFL PLAY 60 grants support specific areas of need identified by schools and educators, including physical activity equipment, FLAG football, recess enhancements and inclusive physical education, and well-being resources. “Kids need chances to move during the school day, and right now, too many don’t get enough,” said Chad Brown, board chair for the American Heart Association – Washington. “We're proud to collaborate with schools across Washington to give students more opportunities for physical activity, building healthy habits early.” NFL PLAY 60 is an initiative designed to help children develop healthy habits for a better chance at a longer, healthier life. Rooted in science, the program encourages kids to get a minimum of 60 minutes of vigorous physical activity each day to meet the [U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans](https://health.gov/paguidelines/default.aspx). NFL mascots in the [NFL PLAY 60 Ambassador Class](https://www.heart.org/en/professional/educator/nfl-play-60/nfl-play-60-mascot-ambassador-class) are also working to inspire kids to move more to support mental and physical well-being. The current ambassador class includes Freddie Falcon, Atlanta Falcons; Gumbo, New Orleans Saints; Rampage, Los Angeles Rams; Roary, Detroit Lions; Rowdy, Dallas Cowboys; Sir Purr, Carolina Panthers; and T-Rac, Tennessee Titans. Grant applications are accepted year-round.
