## Executive GIST (TL;DR)
- The American Heart Association's **Alaska Heart Run & Walk** drew more than 1,000 people to the Alaska Airlines Center in Anchorage on Sept. 19, 2026 to celebrate heart disease and stroke survivors and support the Association's mission. - The event raised $227,000 and counting for research, education and local impact initiatives. Funds were raised through teams, companies and individual participants. - Organizers provided Hands-Only CPR training at the event to increase community readiness to respond to cardiac arrest and build a network of local lifesavers. - Chrissy Colucci, AHA Alaska executive director, emphasized Alaska's tradition of helping others and the aim of increasing confidence to perform Hands-Only CPR. - The Association's 2024 CPR Perceptions Survey showed 39% of respondents felt "extremely confident" or "very confident" in their ability to perform CPR, up from 33% in 2021 — an increase the release quantified as roughly 17.7 million more adults highly confident in CPR skills. However, 61% still report low confidence to act in a cardiac emergency. - Event highlights included a festival area with photo opportunities, blood pressure screenings, Hands-Only CPR demonstrations, a tribute wall, a 5K race and non-competitive 3K and 5K walking routes. - Top fundraising employers were Alaska Heart & Vascular Institute, Providence Alaska and Gemini Executive Professional Coaching; the top community team was Donovan's Hope. Top runners were Sebastian Szweda Mittelstadt, Brendan Hill and Josean Olivieri. - The Alaska Heart Run & Walk was locally sponsored by Alaska Heart & Vascular Institute and Providence Alaska. Attendees and the public are directed to AlaskaHeartRun.org for Hands-Only CPR information and donations. - The release lists AHA contact points for media and public inquiries and restates the American Heart Association's mission to fund research, advocate for public health and provide resources to improve heart and stroke outcomes.

As part of the event, participants also learned Hands-Only CPR, helping build a community of lifesavers in Anchorage ready to act in a cardiac arrest emergency. “Alaskans have a long tradition of stepping up when others need help,” said Chrissy Colucci, American Heart Association – Alaska executive director."By giving more people the confidence and skills to perform Hands-Only CPR, we're working toward creating a culture where more people have the confidence to act in a cardiac arrest emergency.” According to the Association's 2024 CPR Perceptions Survey, 39% of respondents report feeling "extremely confident" or "very confident" when asked about their ability to perform CPR — an increase from 33% in 2021, which equates to approximately 17.7 million more adults highly confident in their CPR skills. However, 61% of respondents still do not report high levels of confidence to act during a cardiac emergency, underscoring the critical need for continued CPR training and awareness. Highlights from the day included a festival area with photo opportunities, blood pressure screenings, Hands-Only CPR demonstrations, a tribute wall where participants could remember those lost to heart disease and stroke, a 5Krace and non-competitive 3K and 5K walking path.
