## Executive GIST (TL;DR)
- The American Heart Association launched the **My Health is Our Health** campaign in Austin as part of its **Go Red for Women** movement to raise awareness of the link between **pregnancy** and **cardiovascular disease**. - The initiative is supported locally by **Ascension Seton**, which is contributing clinical and educational support to help pregnant women and new mothers understand cardiovascular risk. - Pregnancy functions as a natural “stress test,” often revealing conditions such as **high blood pressure** and **gestational diabetes** that signal elevated future heart disease risk. - Adverse pregnancy outcomes cited include **preeclampsia**, gestational diabetes, and fetal growth restriction; these can increase lifetime risk of heart disease, heart failure and stroke for mothers and predispose children to metabolic and cardiac issues. - The United States has the highest maternal mortality rates among developed countries; pregnancy-related deaths have risen substantially over recent decades, and many pregnancy-associated deaths are avoidable. - The campaign emphasizes awareness, education and early management of cardiovascular risk during and after pregnancy to improve short- and long-term outcomes for mothers and children. - Ascension Seton frames the effort as part of its commitment to improving maternal health outcomes and enabling women to access information and care during pregnancy and beyond. - The release includes statements from Dr. Jeny Ghartey, Maternal Fetal Medicine specialist and Chief of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Ascension Seton, and Derek Curlee, Vice President of Women's Services at Ascension Seton, highlighting the importance of prioritizing heart health in maternity care. - The American Heart Association directs readers to its Go Red for Women pregnancy resources for more information on cardiovascular disease in pregnancy. - Media and public contact information for the American Heart Association is provided in the source for follow-up inquiries.

The American Heart Association has launched the My Health is Our Health campaign in Austin through its Go Red for Women movement. Supported locally by Ascension Seton, the initiative aims to help pregnant women and new mothers better understand the connection between pregnancy and cardiovascular disease, the leading cause of maternal death in the United States. The United States has the highest maternal mortality rates among developed countries, with pregnancy-related deaths rising 361% over the last three decades. Pregnancy and childbirth can put women’s health at risk, but many pregnancy-associated deaths can be avoided. Until recently, there has been little focus on how early cardiovascular health can contribute to adverse pregnancy outcomes for women and their babies. “A mother’s heart health sets the stage for her baby’s future,” said Dr. Jeny Ghartey, Maternal Fetal Medicine specialist and Chief of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Ascension Seton. “When mothers experience high blood pressure or gestational diabetes, it can predispose their children to metabolic and heart issues down the road, especially if these conditions are associated with fetal growth restriction (small babies). Early management protects mothers now and shapes a healthier long-term future for their children.” Pregnancy acts as a natural stress test for the body. It challenges the heart and blood vessels in unique ways, often bringing to light underlying conditions that might have remained hidden. Think of it as a health preview—conditions like high blood pressure or gestational diabetes are not just temporary pregnancy complications; they are important early warning signs that suggest a woman may have an elevated risk for heart disease later in life. By identifying these signals early, we have a unique opportunity to manage these risks and significantly improve a woman’s long-term cardiovascular health. There are many factors that impact a woman’s cardiovascular health during pregnancy, including age, race/ethnicity, hypertension and weight. Adverse pregnancy outcomes like preeclampsia and gestational diabetes can contribute to long-term complications, including a lifetime risk of heart disease, heart failure and stroke. With awareness and education, lives can be saved. Moms-to-be and new moms can safeguard the health of themselves and their children. By understanding their risk and prioritizing their well-being, we can build a healthier future for everyone, everywhere. Ascension Seton is supporting the campaign as part of its commitment to improving maternal health outcomes and helping women access the information and care they need throughout pregnancy and beyond. “Comprehensive maternity care must prioritize heart health to truly safeguard the future of our community,” said Derek Curlee, Vice President of Women's Services at Ascension Seton. “Our clinical teams witness daily how proactive education and early cardiovascular intervention can improve outcomes for expectant mothers. By supporting the My Health is Our Health initiative in Austin, we are empowering women with the knowledge to recognize their risks and the tools to advocate for their own well-being.” By helping women recognize the signs, risk factors and long-term impacts of cardiovascular disease, the American Heart Association and Ascension Seton hope to empower more families across Central Texas to build healthier futures together.
