In an instant, what had been a relaxing afternoon turned into a fight for his life. Robin, a CPR trainer of 30 years, immediately called for someone to dial 9-1-1 and began CPR. “I didn’t have time to think,” Robin said. “I just saw he was unresponsive and knew what I had to do.” A passing sheriff stopped to help until first responders reached the scene with an automated external defibrillator (AED). They delivered five shocks before Russ’ heart started beating again. Today, Russ is alive because his wife took action in a critical moment. The Giles’ story is a powerful reminder of why the American Heart Association’s Heart Walk is working to build a Nation of Lifesavers. [According to the Heart Association](https://cpr.heart.org/en/resources/cpr-facts-and-stats/), 9 in 10 people who suffer cardiac arrest outside of the hospital die, and more than half don’t receive bystander CPR. Building a Nation of Lifesavers is a focus of the four [Bay Area Heart Walks](https://www2.heart.org/site/TR/HeartWalk/WSA-WesternStatesAffiliate?pg=entry&fr_id=13150), which take place throughout September in Walnut Creek (Sept. 19), San Francisco (Sept. 24), San Jose (Sept. 26) and Rohnert Park (Sept. 27). Throughout the year and at the four events, the Association teaches employees and community members how to perform lifesaving CPR. Russ will be kicking off the culminating North Bay Heart Walk by beating the ceremonial drum, symbolizing the heartbeat he still has because a loved one stepped in to save his life. Today, Russ is continuing his recovery with a new pacemaker and defibrillator, and he’s grateful to be back to everyday activities, including walks with his dog. He credits his survival to Robin, who knew how to act when every second counted. Inspired by their experience, Robin recently hosted a CPR training for neighbors in Clear Lake and even purchased an AED for the community. “Cardiac arrest can strike anyone at any time, and the outcome often comes down to whether someone nearby knows what to do,” said Bruce Byrd, co-chair of Bay Area Heart Walk and executive vice president and general counsel, Palo Alto Networks. “We envision at least one person in every household feeling confident to perform CPR.
