## Executive GIST (TL;DR)
- Hundreds gathered at the Spokane Convention Center Riverside Lawn for the Washington Heart and Stroke Walk to honor survivors, provide **Hands-Only CPR** education and raise funds for the American Heart Association. - The release underscores that about **436,000 Americans die from cardiac arrest each year**, most often outside hospitals, and that bystander CPR can double or triple survival chances. - Less than half of cardiac arrest victims currently receive bystander CPR, highlighting a community preparedness gap the Association aims to close through events and training. - Spokane Valley cardiac arrest survivor Shelly Copeland led a ceremonial drumbeat to symbolize the collective heartbeat of survivors and participants; she attributes survival to co-workers who began CPR when she collapsed while teaching. - The ceremonial drum was taken to the finish line for survivors of heart disease and stroke to strike in celebration of their journeys. - The Association's 2024 CPR Perceptions Survey found 39% of respondents reported being “extremely” or “very confident” in their ability to perform CPR (up from 33% in 2021), an increase that equates to approximately 17.7 million more adults reporting high confidence. - Despite that increase, 61% of survey respondents still do not report high confidence to act in a cardiac emergency, indicating ongoing need for training and awareness. - Amy Winsor, volunteer chair of the Washington Heart and Stroke Walk, emphasized that equipping more people with **Hands-Only CPR** builds a culture where households are prepared to act when seconds count. - Heart Walk is the American Heart Association’s largest community initiative, reaching more than 10 million people nationwide annually through fundraising, education and corporate engagement to expand CPR access, research funding and health equity. - Local sponsors for the Washington Heart and Stroke Walk included Providence Health Plan, Delta Dental of Washington, Mary Bridge Children’s Hospital, Sound Physicians and MultiCare Health System. - The release directs readers to WashingtonHeartWalk.org for Hands-Only CPR learning and donations and notes event photos and videos are available for download with American Heart Association photo credit. - Contact information for media and public inquiries and a brief organizational overview of the American Heart Association were provided in the release.

The event celebrated heart disease and stroke survivors, shared Hands-Only CPR education and raised funds for the American Heart Association, a relentless force changing the future of health for everyone, everywhere. According to the American Heart Association, approximately 436,000 Americans die from cardiac arrest each year — most often outside a hospital. Bystander CPR can double or triple a cardiac arrest victim’s chance of survival, yet fewer than half receive it, highlighting a critical gap in community preparedness. Offering Hands-Only CPR education through the Heart and Stroke Walk is one way the Association is working to close the gap. During the event program, Spokane Valley cardiac arrest survivor Shelly Copeland began a ceremonial drumbeat symbolizing the collective heartbeat of survivors and participants. Copeland credits her survival to co-workers who immediately began CPR after she collapsed while teaching. Following the ceremony, the drum was moved to the Heart and Stroke Walk finish line, where survivors of heart disease and stroke were invited to strike it in celebration of their journey. According to the Association's 2024 CPR Perceptions Survey, 39% of respondents report feeling "extremely confident" or "very confident" when asked about their ability to perform CPR — an increase from 33% in 2021, which equates to approximately 17.7 million more adults highly confident in their CPR skills. However, 61% of respondents still do not report high levels of confidence to act during a cardiac emergency, underscoring the critical need for continued CPR training and awareness. "In a cardiac emergency, any one of us could be the difference between life and death," said Amy Winsor, volunteer chair of the Washington Heart and Stroke Walk and associate vice president of Heart Center Strategy and Operations for MultiCare Mary Bridge Children's. "By equipping more people with Hands-Only CPR skills, we're building a culture where every household has someone prepared to act when every second counts." Heart Walk™ is the Association’s largest community-facing initiative, reaching more than 10 million people nationwide each year. Through fundraising, community education and corporate engagement, Heart Walk aims to enhance CPR training accessibility, bolster bystander preparedness, increase funding for cardiovascular research and drive equitable health for all people. The Washington Heart and Stroke Walk is locally sponsored by Providence Health Plan, Delta Dental of Washington, Mary Bridge Children’s Hospital, Sound Physicians and MultiCare Health System.
