## Executive GIST (TL;DR)
- Representative Kim Schrier (D-WA) will assume the role of Democratic co-chair of the **Congressional Diabetes Caucus** when the new Congress convenes in January 2027; she replaces Representative Diana DeGette (D-CO). - Representative Gus Bilirakis (R-FL) will remain the Republican co-chair, maintaining bipartisan leadership in the caucus. - Schrier is the only pediatrician in Congress and the only member of the House who lives with **type 1 diabetes**; she received her diagnosis at age 16, the article reported. - The Endocrine Society described a longstanding partnership with the caucus and listed ongoing collaborative priorities, including **insulin** affordability and funding for the Special Diabetes Program. - The Society thanked Representative DeGette for her leadership on diabetes-related issues during her tenure and expressed intent to work with Schrier on prevention, expanded research, and improved treatments in the next Congress. - The source did not report specific legislative proposals, voting records, or the precise agenda items Representative Schrier will pursue as co-chair; those details remain to be announced by the caucus or representative. - Timing: announcement published October 13, 2026; new co-chair role begins with the convening of Congress in January 2027. - Unanswered policy questions remain, including concrete plans to address insulin costs, the scope of Special Diabetes Program funding requests, and legislative timetables for prevention, research, and treatment measures.

January October 13, 2026 Print this article Share this article ![](https://endocrinenews.endocrine.org/wp-content/uploads/Advocacy_Representative-Kim-Schrier.jpg) Representative Kim Schrier (D-WA) has been named as the new Democratic co-chair of the Congressional Diabetes Caucus. Representative Schrier will replace Representative Diana DeGette (D-CO) when the new Congress convenes in January 2027 after DeGette lost her re-election earlier this year. Representative Gus Bilirakis (R-FL) will continue to serve as the Republican co-chair of the Caucus. Schrier is the only pediatrician serving in Congress and the only representative with type 1 diabetes. She was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes when she was 16 years old. The Society has a longstanding partnership with the Congressional Diabetes Caucus, and we work closely with the co-chairs on a wide range of issues impacting endocrinologists and the patients they treat living with diabetes. These issues include insulin affordability and funding for the Special Diabetes Program. We are grateful to Representative DeGette for her leadership and accomplishments on diabetes issues during her time in Congress. We look forward to working with Representative Schrier on these priorities in the next Congress and know she will make important contributions to legislation aimed at better prevention, increased research, and better treatment of diabetes. * * * ## TOPICS IN THIS ARTICLE: [Clinical](https://endocrinenews.endocrine.org/category/advocacy/clinical/) ←[Measuring Up to Cancer: The Association Between the Degree of Hypercortisolism and Metastatic Disease](https://endocrinenews.endocrine.org/measuring-up-to-cancer-the-association-between-the-degree-of-hypercortisolism-and-metastatic-disease/) [Could PMOS/PCOS Be Linked to Alzheimer’s Disease and Dementia?](https://endocrinenews.endocrine.org/could-pmos-pcos-be-linked-to-alzheimers-disease-and-dementia/)→ ## RELATED ARTICLES * ### [ Endocrine Society Rallies for the NIH ](https://endocrinenews.endocrine.org/endocrine-society-rallies-for-the-nih/) October 7, 2026 * ### [ Endocrine Society Advocacy Win: Senate HELP Committee Passes INSULIN Act ](https://endocrinenews.endocrine.org/endocrine-society-advocacy-win-senate-help-committee-passes-insulin-act/) September 15, 2026 * ![Endocrine Society Fights to Protect Research and Permanently Block OMB Rule](https://endocrinenews.endocrine.org/wp-content/uploads/1217_AdvocacyRoundtable-e1786972577470.jpg) ### [ Endocrine Society Fights to Protect Research and Permanently Block OMB Rule ](https://endocrinenews.endocrine.org/endocrine-society-fights-to-protect-research-and-permanently-block-omb-rule/) September 8, 2026 * * * ADVERTISEMENT ![September 2026](https://endocrinenews.endocrine.org/wp-content/uploads/09.26.cover_-765x1024.jpg) [View Archives](https://endocrinenews.endocrine.org/magazine-issues/) ADVERTISEMENT ADVERTISEMENT ![](https://endocrinenews.endocrine.org/wp-content/themes/mg-starter/assets/images/scientists_optim-1024x569.jpg) ## Join the Global Movement Advancing Endocrine Science and Medicine Become a part of a community of 18,000-plus endocrine investigators and clinicians who conduct research and provide quality patient care in more than 100 countries.
