## Executive GIST (TL;DR)
- A cohort analysis from the 46-year follow-up of the Northern Finland Birth Cohort 1966 examined coffee intake and cardiometabolic markers in more than 2,200 participants. The study appears in the European Journal of Nutrition. - Habitual **coffee** drinkers, especially those with the highest consumption, had lower total and **visceral fat** and greater skeletal **muscle mass** compared with non-drinkers, even when BMI was similar. - Higher coffee intake correlated with lower circulating levels of **branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs)**, a biomarker linked to obesity, type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular risk. - In men, greater coffee consumption was additionally associated with a more favorable glucose–insulin profile and higher total and bioavailable **testosterone** and **sex hormone–binding globulin (SHBG)**. - Authors and interviewed clinicians note these are observational associations; the study does not prove causation and cannot identify a single coffee compound as responsible. - Experts highlighted that coffee contains many bioactive compounds beyond caffeine (chlorogenic acids, trigonelline, etc.) and that coffee’s metabolic impact likely interacts with diet, physical activity, protein intake, sleep, and stress management. - Clinicians cautioned that caloric coffee beverages with sugars and fats differ metabolically from plain brewed coffee and that effects may differ between individuals. - The study contributes to understanding modifiable dietary exposures and body composition but leaves mechanistic questions unresolved and calls for further research to clarify causality and pathways.

Now, a new study published in the [European Journal of Nutrition](https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s00394-026-04038-z) provides more evidence linking coffee consumption to cardiometabolic health. **Researchers found that drinking coffee may help improve a person’s body composition and metabolic markers, such as visceral fat.** ## Why focus on coffee? For this study, researchers analyzed health data for more than 2,200 participants from the 46-year follow-up of the [Northern Finland Birth Cohort 1966Trusted Source](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/projects/gap/cgi-bin/study.cgi?study_id=phs000276.v2.p1). Study participants were asked questions about their coffee consumption habits and completed numerous health assessments, including [body mass index (BMI)](https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/323586), [waist-to-hip ratio](https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/319439), [body fat percentage](https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/body-fat-percentage-chart), and skeletal muscle mass. “Poor body composition and metabolic health are closely tied to the risk of conditions like type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease, which remain among the biggest public health burdens worldwide,” [Luca Verroest](https://www.researchgate.net/profile/Luca-Verroest-2), doctoral researcher at the University of Oulu in Finland, and lead author of this study, told _Medical News Today_. “Much of this risk is shaped by everyday, modifiable factors like diet, so understanding how common dietary components, such as coffee, relate to these markers helps build a more complete picture of prevention, alongside established factors like physical activity and body weight,” he explained. “Coffee is one of the most widely consumed beverages globally, and Finland has the highest per-capita consumption in the world, so it’s a highly relevant exposure to study in a Finnish cohort,” Verroest continued. > “Coffee is also far more than just [caffeine](https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/285194): it contains over a thousand bioactive compounds, of which many may have biological effects of their own. Yet despite how commonly it’s consumed, we still don’t fully understand how it relates to metabolic and hormonal health.” > — Luca Verroest, lead author [![TAKE YOUR QUIZ](https://i0.wp.com/healthline-activation-prod.healthline.com/driver-images/Noom%20Egg%20Resized%20JPEG.jpg)](https://www.noom.com/programs/health-weight/affiliate-trial-npb/?utm_medium=partnerweb&utm_campaign=weight&utm_content=native&utm_term=&gid=&utm_source=healthline&upv=3&sp=redventures&step=pros&lang=en&clid=71eb244d-db2c-4935-9e5d-f32e19084a65&rvo_aff=1&rvo_brandid=Noom&rvo_prodid=a4010a9b-b40a-4423-8729-af7d3df6942b&rvo_subid=e%3Ahw_s%3Amnt_n%3Aothernutrition_b%3Anoom_g%3Aus_d%3Aall_l%3Afirst_c%3Aperf_i%3Aevergreen_v%3Acontrol_54113&rvo_subid2=%2Farticles%2Fcoffee-drinking-linked-less-abdominal-fat-more-muscle-better-hormone-balance&rvo_sys=mar&noFollowParam=1&transit_id=3b6a1c26-b800-4101-8651-dda87482c165&transit_id=3b6a1c26-b800-4101-8651-dda87482c165&transit_id=3b6a1c26-b800-4101-8651-dda87482c165&transit_id=3b6a1c26-b800-4101-8651-dda87482c165&correlationId=71eb244d-db2c-4935-9e5d-f32e19084a65) ADVERTISEMENT Noom Noom’s 5–minute quiz unlocks a weight loss program customized for you – now with GLP-1 options – so you can manage your health and form habits that last. **Exclusive 21-day free trial!** [TAKE YOUR QUIZ](https://www.noom.com/programs/health-weight/affiliate-trial-npb/?utm_medium=partnerweb&utm_campaign=weight&utm_content=native&utm_term=&gid=&utm_source=healthline&upv=3&sp=redventures&step=pros&lang=en&clid=71eb244d-db2c-4935-9e5d-f32e19084a65&rvo_aff=1&rvo_brandid=Noom&rvo_prodid=a4010a9b-b40a-4423-8729-af7d3df6942b&rvo_subid=e%3Ahw_s%3Amnt_n%3Aothernutrition_b%3Anoom_g%3Aus_d%3Aall_l%3Afirst_c%3Aperf_i%3Aevergreen_v%3Acontrol_54113&rvo_subid2=%2Farticles%2Fcoffee-drinking-linked-less-abdominal-fat-more-muscle-better-hormone-balance&rvo_sys=mar&noFollowParam=1&transit_id=3b6a1c26-b800-4101-8651-dda87482c165&transit_id=3b6a1c26-b800-4101-8651-dda87482c165&transit_id=3b6a1c26-b800-4101-8651-dda87482c165&transit_id=3b6a1c26-b800-4101-8651-dda87482c165&correlationId=71eb244d-db2c-4935-9e5d-f32e19084a65) 45 Million+ downloads * * * "Nutritionist Approved" * * * 45k+ 5 **★** reviews ![Footer Logo](https://media.post.rvohealth.io/2kLEJX4A3LDe7GGDNr31WST2A26/2026/01/23/38ffbpzlVpC0Yf1Wfnz1TRztfUE.png) ## Drinking more coffee leads to lower visceral fat, better muscle mass At the study’s conclusion, researchers discovered that study participants who drank the highest amounts of coffee had lower total and visceral fat and better skeletal muscle mass, when compared to participants who did not drink coffee, regardless of them both having similar BMIs. “(This) suggests that BMI alone may not capture some of the more meaningful differences in body composition associated with coffee consumption,” Verroest said. **“People with the same BMI can have quite different amounts of fat versus muscle, and our findings point to habitual coffee drinkers having a comparatively leaner profile (lower total and visceral fat, more skeletal muscle) that BMI alone wouldn’t reveal,” he explained.** Additionally, consuming higher amounts of coffee was linked to lower circulating levels of [branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs)](https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/324605) — a [known biomarker](https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC11179788/) for cardiometabolic health that are also linked to an increased risk for obesity, type 2 diabetes, and heart disease. “Coffee itself isn’t a meaningful source of BCAAs, so this isn’t about coffee adding or displacing amino acids in the diet,” Verroest explained. > “Finding that higher coffee consumption correlated with lower circulating BCAA levels in both men and women adds an interesting angle to how coffee might relate to this metabolic pathway, though as a correlational finding, it can’t tell us whether coffee directly improves this clearance process or simply tracks alongside better metabolic health for other reasons.” > — Luca Verroest, lead author ## Male coffee drinkers experience additional benefits When looking at male vs female participants, Verroest and his team found that in men, higher coffee intake was associated with a more beneficial [glucose–insulin profile](https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/323760), as well as increased amounts of total and bioavailable [testosterone](https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/276013) and [sex hormone–binding globulin (SHBG)](https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC12109167/). “This was one of the most distinct findings in our study,” Verroest said. “Both total testosterone and SHBG have been linked in other research to a lower risk of conditions like [metabolic syndrome](https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/263834) and type 2 diabetes, so this hormonal pattern fits coherently with the more favorable glucose-insulin profile we observed in the same men.” > “Coffee appears to leave a measurable fingerprint on the body’s metabolism and hormones, and that fingerprint looks different in men than in women.” > — Luca Verroest, lead author “It’s a new piece in the puzzle of how a beverage most of us drink without a second thought may relate to long-term health. That said, this is an observational study, so it shows associations rather than proof that coffee causes these changes,” Verroest added. ![Treatment overview](https://media.post.rvohealth.io/2kLEJX4A3LDe7GGDNr31WST2A26/2026/05/27/3EJry8pfzOlTfJTztpVj0SlUtqz.png) Medically reviewed ### What to Eat on Zepbound Start here or dive deeper into another topic to learn about Zepbound [Read More](https://www.healthline.com/health/drugs/what-to-eat-on-zepbound?utm_source=mnt&utm_medium=CDI-pathing&subid=e%3Ahw_s%3Amnt_p%3Acdi_n%3Aweightmgt_l%3Amiddle_i%3Apathingcomponentcomboimage_v%3Azepbound_54261&rvo_subid=e%3Ahw_s%3Amnt_p%3Acdi_n%3Aweightmgt_l%3Amiddle_i%3Alength_v%3Av2zepbound_54684&rvo_sys=mar&noFollowParam=1&transit_id=3b6a1c26-b800-4101-8651-dda87482c165&transit_id=3b6a1c26-b800-4101-8651-dda87482c165&transit_id=3b6a1c26-b800-4101-8651-dda87482c165&transit_id=3b6a1c26-b800-4101-8651-dda87482c165) [![](https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/coffee-drinking-linked-less-abdominal-fat-more-muscle-better-hormone-balance)Side Effects](https://www.healthline.com/health/drugs/zepbound-side-effects?utm_source=mnt&utm_medium=CDI-pathing)[![](https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/coffee-drinking-linked-less-abdominal-fat-more-muscle-better-hormone-balance)Average Weight Loss](https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/drugs-average-weight-loss-on-zepbound?utm_source=mnt&utm_medium=CDI-pathing) ## Coffee may not improve weight and health for everyone _MNT_ spoke with [Mir Ali, MD](https://www.memorialcare.org/providers/mir-b-ali), a bariatric surgeon, bariatric medicine specialist, and medical director of MemorialCare Surgical Weight Loss Center at Orange Coast Medical Center in Fountain Valley, CA, who commented that this study’s findings verify what we’ve seen from other studies that caffeine does have some benefit to weight loss and overall health in general, though the specific mechanism is not clearly understood. “There’s some benefits that we’ve seen from other research in coffee that it does have a mild [appetite suppressant effect](https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC12454747/),” Ali, who was not involved in this study, explained. > “[Coffee] may stimulate the metabolism to some extent. And in this study, it showed that it stimulates some hormonal function as well. So it’s probably a combination of all of these things that improve visceral fat and other benefits.” > — Mir Ali, MD As obesity continues to increase worldwide, Ali said it’s important for researchers to continue to find new ways i
