## Executive GIST (TL;DR)
- The study evaluated test–retest reliability of maximal **isometric trunk flexion and extension** measured with the VALD ForceFrame Strength Testing System in community-dwelling adults. - Twenty-nine healthy participants completed two testing sessions performing maximal isometric trunk flexion and extension with the ForceFrame. - Reliability was assessed with the Intraclass Correlation Coefficient (**ICC**) and agreement metrics; an r value and ICC ranges were reported for each test. - Trunk flexion showed very high correlation (r = 0.92) with an ICC range of 0.83–0.86; trunk extension showed very high correlation (r = 0.93) with an ICC range of 0.86–0.97. - The calculated minimum detectable change (MDC) values were reported as 71.35 N for flexion and 101.20 N for extension, derived from the standard error of measurement (SEM). - Authors conclude the VALD ForceFrame offers clinicians a **reliable** standardized method to assess change in trunk flexor and extensor strength compared with less standardized handheld dynamometry. - Study was conducted on healthy adults; participant number and healthy status were reported, but detailed participant demographics were not provided in the source. - Ethical approval was obtained from the Brisbane Private Hospital Low Risk Ethics Committee (LREC21BPH2); participant consent and reporting guideline compliance were confirmed. - The project received a research grant from Johnson & Johnson Health Care Products & Pharmaceuticals (DPS-SPINE-2020-017); data are not publicly available but de-identified data may be requested from the corresponding author subject to approval. - The preprint was posted on medRxiv on September 23, 2026.

Handheld dynamometry is popular amongst clinicians due to its convenience. However, poor standardisation of the testing position can lead to suboptimal intra-rater reliability, which consequently reduces the validity of the results. The VALD ForceFrame Strength Testing System is a portable and standardized hybrid strength-assessment system that quantifies strength and power outputs. This study aims to assess the test-retest reliability of isometric trunk flexion and extension strength using the ForceFrame testing technology. A total of 29 healthy participants undertook two testing sessions, each requiring them to perform maximal isometric trunk flexion and extension using the ForceFrame. Test re-test reliability was assessed using the Intraclass Correlation Coefficient (ICC), and the standard error of measure (SEM) was used to calculate the minimum detectable change. Excellent reliability was observed for both trunk flexion (r= 0.92; ICC= 0.83- 0.86) and extension (r= 0.93; ICC= 0.86- 0.97) tests, and the minimum detectable changes observed were 71.35N and 101.20N, respectively. The results from this study suggest that the VALD force frame offers clinicians a reliable method of assessing change in trunk flexor and extensor strength. ### Competing Interest Statement This project was supported by a research grant from Johnson & Johnson Health Care Products & Pharmaceuticals (grant number: DPS-SPINE-2020-017). ### Author Declarations I confirm all relevant ethical guidelines have been followed, and any necessary IRB and/or ethics committee approvals have been obtained.
