Gallo Oct. 9, 2026 Gallo is founding director of the University of South Florida’s Institute for Translational Virology & Innovation, director of the microbial oncology program at the Tampa General Hospital Cancer Institute, and co-founder and international scientific director of the Global Virus Network. September marked 50 years since my colleagues and I published a paper describing what became known as interleukin-2, or IL-2, one of the first cytokines to be discovered and a protein essential to the growth and regulation of T cells. Science marked that anniversary with [a perspective](https://www.science.org/doi/10.1126/science.aee8320) by renowned immunologists Rafi Ahmed and Steven Rosenberg examining the discovery. Their perspective prompted me to reflect on a question I’ve been asked many times over the years: What has been IL-2’s greatest legacy? My answer depends on how you define importance. Advertisement From my perspective, IL-2 made possible the discovery of the first human retroviruses, including one that is the only known cause of a human leukemia, and ultimately, HIV. From that came the evidence that HIV causes AIDS and the development of the blood test that helped protect the blood supply.
