## Executive GIST (TL;DR)
- The authors reported that common assumptions treating surrounding tissue and cerebrospinal fluid as passive volume conductors in electrophysiology may be incomplete. - Investigators combined conductive-fluid phantom experiments, structural magnetic resonance imaging, and in vivo **EEG** and **MEG** recordings to probe non-neural sources. - In phantom tests, mechanically driven conductive fluid generated structured, oscillatory, source-localizable electromagnetic signals resembling human M/EEG in the absence of neural tissue. - The team observed that interindividual differences in **CSF** volume systematically moderated M/EEG signal amplitude across participants. - Data indicated that electromagnetic and mechanical processes operate as a coupled system at scales accessible to invasive and noninvasive electrophysiology. - The authors noted that contributions from neural currents and fluid motion cannot readily be uniquely separated based on the reported measures. - The report is a preprint and has not undergone peer review; authors declared no competing interests and listed several funders. - The source did not report specific mechanistic breakdowns, precise quantitative effect sizes, or clinical diagnostic thresholds tied to fluid-related signal components.

Using conductive-fluid phantom experiments, structural magnetic resonance imaging, and in vivo EEG and MEG recordings, the present report challenges this assumption. Mechanically driven conductive fluid generated structured, oscillatory, source-localizable electromagnetic signals resembling M/EEG in the absence of neural tissue, and interindividual differences in CSF volume systematically moderated M/EEG signal amplitude. These findings suggest that, at the scales accessed by invasive and non-invasive electrophysiology, electromagnetic and mechanical processes form a coupled system in which contributions of neural currents and fluid motion cannot readily be uniquely separated. ### Competing Interest Statement The authors have declared no competing interest. ## Funder Information Declared Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft, PO 1915/7-1 Swiss National Science Foundation, 105314_207580 National Institute on Drug Abuse, R21 DA14111 Copyright The copyright holder for this preprint is the author/funder, who has granted bioRxiv a license to display the preprint in perpetuity.
