## Executive GIST (TL;DR)
- Investigators combined behavioral assays, neural recordings, and recurrent network modeling to study how temporal weighting of sensory evidence flexibly adjusts during perceptual decisions. - Macaques performed a **motion-discrimination** task in which the temporal statistics of sensory evidence were manipulated to favor early, late, or uniform integration across trials. - Psychophysical kernels derived from behavior shifted in accordance with the temporal statistics, indicating reweighting of moment-by-moment evidence by the subject. - The cohort showed systematic changes in motion discriminability and in choice-related modulation of activity measured in visual area **MT** that tracked those temporal-weighting conditions. - The study team implemented a recurrent sensory–decision network with reciprocal feedforward and feedback interactions plus a temporally structured modulatory input resembling an **urgency** signal. - Model simulations reproduced key behavioral kernels and neural signatures across the early, late and uniform conditions, according to the authors. - Mechanistic insight: altering onset and dynamics of the modulatory input reconfigured the temporal profile of evidence weighting without major changes to baseline sensory response dynamics. - Choice-related activity in **MT** was decomposed by the investigators into a bottom-up component matching the psychophysical kernel time-course and a top-down component reflecting decision build-up. - Data indicated that flexible temporal integration can arise from interactions among sensory transmission, recurrent decision circuits, and temporally structured modulatory drive. - The preprint did not report some implementation specifics (for example, exact modulatory input parameters and detailed neuronal population sizes), and it did not provide clinical or translational endpoints.

How such flexibility emerges from interactions between sensory and decision circuits remains unclear. Here, we combined behavioral and neural measurements with recurrent network modeling to investigate the mechanisms underlying temporal weighting of sensory evidence. Macaques performed a motion-discrimination task in which the temporal statistics of sensory evidence favored early, late or uniform integration. Behavioral psychophysical kernels revealed corresponding shifts in the influence of evidence across time, accompanied by systematic changes in motion discriminability and choice-related activity modulation in visual area MT. We developed a recurrent sensory-decision network incorporating reciprocal feedforward and feedback interactions and a temporally structured modulatory input, resembling an urgency signal. The model reproduced the observed behavioral and neural signatures across temporal weighting conditions. Mechanistically, shifting the onset and dynamics of modulatory inputs systematically reconfigured the temporal profile of evidence weighting without substantially altering sensory response dynamics. Choice-related activity in MT can be decomposed in a bottom-up component with the same time-course as the psychophysical kernel, and a top-down component reflecting the decision build-up. These findings suggest that flexible temporal integration can emerge from dynamic interactions between sensory transmission, recurrent decision circuits and temporally structured urgency modulation, providing a mechanistic framework for how neural systems adapt the computation of sensory evidence to changing task demands. ### Competing Interest Statement The authors have declared no competing interest. ## Funder Information Declared MICIU/AEI/10.13039/501100011033, PID2023-147627OB-I00, CEX2020-001084-M Copyright The copyright holder for this preprint is the author/funder, who has granted bioRxiv a license to display the preprint in perpetuity.
