## Executive GIST (TL;DR)
- A large study analyzing over **2.7 million** patients found that the interval between cancer diagnosis and initiation of first treatment has increased over the past decade. The trend was described as consistent across the cancers the authors examined. - Researchers used the **National Cancer Database**, maintained by the American College of Surgeons, analyzing records from 2012 through 2023 for patients with stage 1–3 cancers considered surgically resectable at diagnosis. - Time to first treatment included any initial therapy: surgery, radiation, chemotherapy, or other medical therapies. - The study’s senior author, Tim Donahue, a surgical oncologist at UCLA, emphasized the consistency of longer waits across every cancer type studied. - The article lists several potential contributing factors cited by the authors: greater **complexity of care**, workforce shortages, and pre-authorization processes, though precise contributions of each were not quantified in the accessible text. - The STAT News article providing these findings is a STAT+ exclusive; the publicly available portion reports study scope, main finding, data source, and suggested explanatory factors but does not include detailed numerical results, per-cancer breakdowns, or specific effect sizes in the accessible excerpt. - Because the full STAT+ article content is behind a subscriber paywall, additional study details (exact increases in days, statistical analyses, stratified findings, and proposed interventions) were not reported in the accessible source text. - The findings raise clinical concern because delays between diagnosis and treatment may increase patient anxiety and carry the potential for disease progression that can affect outcomes, a point noted in the article’s discussion of patient experience. - The study focused on stage 1–3 cancers deemed eligible for surgery at diagnosis and compared time between diagnosis and any first treatment, not limited to surgical timing alone. - The accessible report documents the dataset, study period, patient population scope, and high-level interpretation but lacks granular results due to the article’s paywalled remainder.

There can be fears that the disease is spreading, or progressing to a point where therapies become less effective. Yet over the last few decades, the time cancer patients are waiting between diagnosis and treatment has steadily grown, according to a new study of more than 2.7 million patients. “What was striking was the consistency,” said Tim Donahue, the senior author on the study and a surgical oncologist at the University of California, Los Angeles. “Across every cancer we studied, patients are waiting longer today than they were a decade ago.” Advertisement Donahue and his colleagues analyzed data from the National Cancer Database, a national data repository from the American College of Surgeons, from 2012 to 2023. They looked only at patients with stage 1 to 3 cancers that were considered eligible for surgery at diagnosis across six different cancers. Then, they compared the time between diagnosis and any first treatment, which included surgery as well as radiation or chemotherapy or other medical therapies.
