## Executive GIST (TL;DR)
- This population-based repeated cross-sectional study used School Health Promotion classroom survey data from Finland (2017–2023) with 602,226 adolescent responses across grades 8–11. - **Excessive internet use** was measured with a five-item scale targeting core behavioral addiction symptoms. - Mental health measures included validated questionnaires for **depressive symptoms**, **generalized anxiety**, and **social anxiety**; cognitive functioning was screened with single-item indicators for reading, writing, mathematics tasks and concentration. - From 2017 to 2023 the prevalence of excessive internet use increased overall and the upward trend was markedly stronger among girls than boys (time OR for girls: 1.12 in grades 8–9 and 1.14 in grades 10–11; for boys: 1.00 and 1.04 respectively). - Excessive internet use showed statistically significant associations with short sleep and mental health symptoms: odds ratios ranged between 1.73–2.42 in boys and 1.92–2.26 in girls (p<0.001). - Associations with cognitive challenges were also present: difficulties in reading, writing, mathematics and concentrating were linked to excessive internet use with ORs 1.84–2.31 in boys and 1.83–1.98 in girls (p<0.001). - Ethical approval was provided by the institutional review board of the Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare; authors declared no competing interests. - Data are held by the Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare (THL); confidential but accessible to researchers via Findata or the Finnish Social Science Data Archive for select years. - The preprint cautions that the report has not been peer-reviewed and should not be used to guide clinical practice.

Method We used repeated cross-sectional data from the School Health Promotion study, a population-based nationwide classroom survey in Finland. All adolescents in grades 8-11 were invited, with a total of 602,226 responses in 2017-2023. Excessive internet use was measured with the five-item Excessive Internet Use Scale covering core behavioral addiction symptoms. Depressive symptoms, generalized anxiety, and social anxiety were measured with validated questionnaires. Problems in cognitive functioning were assessed with one-item indicators. Analyses were done with Chi-square tests and logistic regression. Results From 2017 to 2023, the prevalence of excessive internet use increased, especially among girls. The increasing trend was significantly (p ## Funder Information Declared Juho Vainio Foundation, https://ror.org/05jf66d94, 202500482 Foundation for Pediatric Research Copyright The copyright holder for this preprint is the author/funder, who has granted medRxiv a license to display the preprint in perpetuity.
