## Executive GIST (TL;DR)
- Large cross‑sectional survey of 17,235 students aged 6–18 years from 35 schools in Hainan Province assessed refractive error and fitness performance. - Cycloplegic autorefraction measured spherical equivalent refraction (SEmean); **myopia** was defined as SEmean ≤ −0.50 D. - Models adjusted for age, sex, ethnicity, urban–rural residence, near‑work duration, outdoor time, parental myopia, BMI and a centered BMI‑squared term; school clustering accounted for via robust standard errors. - Overall myopia prevalence in the sample was 64.43%. - Among children 6–12 years, investigators observed a nonlinear association between **rope skipping** (skips/min) and refractive outcomes, with an exploratory reference threshold at 66 skips/min. - Below 66 skips/min, each additional 10 skips/min linked to lower odds of **myopia** and a small hyperopic shift in **spherical equivalent refraction** (statistical estimates reported in the source). - Among adolescents 16–18 years, endurance performance showed no clear overall nonlinearity across the distribution; but beyond 307 s, each additional 10 s was associated with higher odds of **myopia** and a shift toward myopic SEmean. - Sensitivity analyses (including waist‑to‑height ratio) produced directionally consistent estimates. - The authors described the identified thresholds as exploratory for school‑level risk stratification rather than causal or diagnostic cutoffs. - Key limitations: cross‑sectional design prevents causal inference and the study lacked direct body‑composition measures; details on fitness testing protocols beyond the reported metrics were not provided in the source.

Methods We surveyed 17235 students aged 6–18 years from 35 schools in seven counties or cities in Hainan Province in December 2023. Cycloplegic autorefraction was used, and spherical equivalent refraction averaged between the two eyes (SEmean) of ≤−0.50 diopters was classified as myopia. Models adjusted for age, sex, ethnicity, urban–rural residence, near-work duration, outdoor activity time, parental myopia history, BMI, and a centered BMI-squared term, with school-clustered robust standard errors. Waist-to-height ratio was examined in sensitivity analyses. Results The overall myopia prevalence was 64.43%. Among students aged 6–12 years, rope skipping showed a nonlinear association with refractive outcomes, with a reference threshold of 66 skips/min. Below this threshold, each additional 10 skips/min was associated with lower odds of myopia (OR 0.949, 95% CI 0.919–0.980; P=0.001) and a 0.034-D shift toward more hyperopic SEmean (95% CI 0.016–0.052; P The Chan Zuckerberg Initiative, Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, the Sergey Brin Family Foundation, California Institute of Technology, Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique, Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center, Imperial College London, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Stanford University, The University of Edinburgh, University of Washington, and Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam.
