## Executive GIST (TL;DR)
- President Trump announced a new round of voluntary pricing agreements with nine drug companies, expanding prior deals that included 17 manufacturers. - The nine companies named are Alcon, Astellas, BeOne, BridgeBio, CSL, Sun Pharma, Kyowa Kirin, Teva, and UCB; all but BridgeBio are headquartered outside the U.S. - Companies pledged to sell new medicines at prices comparable to the lowest prices in peer countries, offer drugs to state Medicaid programs at **most-favored nation** prices, and in some cases bolster domestic manufacturing or contribute to U.S. medical stockpiles. - UCB, Sun Pharma, Teva, and Astellas committed a combined 290 metric tons of active pharmaceutical ingredients to the nation’s strategic reserves as part of the deals. - The administration believes at least some companies will avoid tariffs in exchange for the commitments. - Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. said nine out of 10 drugs prescribed in the U.S. are now covered by the agreements, according to the report. - Details about the agreements’ specific terms, their impact on Medicare, and other implementation elements have not been publicly released. - Observers note uncertainty about how much the deals will affect overall drug costs or access, since Medicaid already receives the lowest U.S. drug prices and some companies (Teva and Sun Pharma) focus on generics. - The agreements are voluntary, private, and temporary arrangements intended to be in place during the current administration; the White House is pressing Congress to codify elements of the approach. - Drugmakers have not uniformly embraced the administration’s broader pricing agenda; companies have resisted publicly endorsing legislation and have explored legal challenges to related federal policies. - The deals expand the administration’s Trump-era pricing agenda and follow earlier promises to negotiate with many more manufacturers to reduce U.S. drug prices.

The new companies striking deals — Alcon, Astellas, BeOne, BridgeBio, CSL, Sun Pharma, Kyowa Kirin, Teva, and UCB — made pledges similar to those made by larger drugmakers before them: to sell new medications to U.S. patients at prices comparable to the lowest prices in peer countries, to offer their drugs to state Medicaid programs at “most-favored nation” prices, and, in some instances, to bolster domestic manufacturing and contribute to the U.S. medical stockpiles. In return, it’s believed at least some of the companies will avoid tariffs. Advertisement UCB, Sun Pharma, Teva, and Astellas will, together, contribute 290 metric tons of active pharmaceutical ingredients to the country’s strategic reserves as part of the deals. All of the new companies except BridgeBio are headquartered outside of the U.S. The agreements come after months of biotech and pharma companies have sought deals with the administration to avoid what they see as price controls through [Medicare pilot programs](https://www.statnews.com/2026/02/24/pharma-opposition-medicare-drug-price-pilot-programs-strategy-emerges/) that would have linked the cost of drugs in the U.S. to their prices in other countries. Health secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. said on Monday nine out of 10 drugs prescribed in the U.S. were now covered by the deals. The details of the new deals, including the impact on Medicare, have not been publicly released. Medicaid already receives the lowest drug prices out of any payer in the U.S. Additionally, two of the companies making new deals, Teva and Sun Pharma, specialize in making generic drugs. The new deals are the latest expansion of Trump’s drug pricing agenda, which has become a centerpiece of the administration’s plans to reform American health care. In April, [administration officials promised](https://www.statnews.com/2026/04/23/trump-drug-price-deal-regeneron-mfn-negotiations/) to work out agreements with the “many hundreds” of other drugmakers. Kennedy said Monday that the president, through a series of “very, very emotional conversations,” made clear he and Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services Administrator Mehmet Oz could lose their jobs if they didn’t deliver drug pricing deals. (“I didn’t want to fire a Kennedy,” Trump said. “I wasn’t going to do that.”) The White House has repeatedly declined to make the details public while also pushing Congress to codify the agreements. Administration officials have [touted declines](https://www.statnews.com/2026/08/18/white-house-claims-drug-price-drop-examined-ed-silverman-pharmalot/) in drug prices in the U.S., though Trump’s signature TrumpRx drug purchasing platform [has fallen short](https://www.statnews.com/2026/03/05/trumprx-high-expectations-limited-impact/) of its grand goals. The voluntary agreements do not mean drugmakers are in full agreement with the administration’s aims. Officials have [tried, and failed](https://www.statnews.com/2026/07/08/trump-officials-want-to-make-generic-medicines-in-the-us/), to get company leaders to endorse its drug pricing legislation. And drugmakers are still [considering their legal options](https://www.statnews.com/2026/02/24/pharma-opposition-medicare-drug-price-pilot-programs-strategy-emerges/) to overturn the administration’s drug pricing policies. Still, private sector leaders have taken officials up on voluntary, private deals [that end with this administration](https://www.statnews.com/2026/02/27/trump-drug-prices-pharma-mfn-deals-3-year-terms/).
