AUSTIN, May 20, 2026 — The American Heart Association is spotlighting landmark advancements in cardiovascular research that are transforming how heart disease and stroke are prevented and treated – with local impact driven in part by its longstanding collaboration with Ascension Seton in Central Texas. Over $285 million has been invested in Texas for heart health research and trials. As the largest non-governmental funder of cardiovascular and stroke research, the Association has invested more than $6.1 billion in scientific research since 1949, supporting over 50,000 projects, including many initiatives that have defined new standards of care. The Association funded research in 1961 demonstrating the effectiveness of CPR in cardiac arrests, laying the groundwork for developing a nation of people prepared to respond in the event of a cardiac emergency. Association-funded research led to the development of stents to open blocked arteries, as well as techniques to perform surgeries inside the heart. In addition, the Association is supporting research to drive a higher standard of care for all. Women represent less than 40% of the participants in cardiovascular clinical trials, a critical gap that Association-powered research is closing. As a Live Fierce, Be Relentless sponsor, Ascension Seton is continuing to support the American Heart Association’s mission to create a world of healthier, longer lives through clinical trials and scientific research into novel therapies for heart failure patients, simplified blood-thinner strategies for patients with atrial fibrillation, and technological developments that are transforming care.
