The BMA is pushing to increase its representation of doctors in private practice in response to more patients seeking healthcare outside the NHS.The union said lengthy NHS waiting lists were prompting more patients to go private—either through health insurance or by paying directly—and therefore an increasing number of doctors were doing private work.The BMA said it wanted to reflect this shift in terms of how it operates as a union.A key part of this change will see the BMA make its Private Practice Committee (PPC) a full branch of practice this year, equivalent to its general practitioners, consultants, and resident doctors committees.The PPC has existed for many years as a specialist body within the BMA’s structure.
