Extract Acute pulmonary embolism (PE) is the third leading cause of cardiovascular emergencies [1] and the leading cause of unexpected in-hospital death in China [2]. Notably, approximately 80% of acute PE-related deaths occur in haemodynamically stable patients [1, 3].
Moreover, patients who die from PE are often not promptly identified during rapid clinical deterioration [4]. Timely and precise recognition of clinical deterioration in these patients may help reduce mortality [5].
European Respiratory Journal published a clinical update in Critical Care on 16 Apr 2026. The item focuses on Performance of the Multimarker Calculator for predicting short-term deterioration and mortality in a Chinese prospective multicentre pulmonary embolism cohort.
