We read with great interest the report on the JCOG1019 randomized phase 3 trial by Kitamura et al. [1].
The trial evaluated the noninferiority of “active surveillance” in comparison to intravesical bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) induction therapy in patients with high-grade (HG) T1 bladder cancer without residual disease at second transurethral resection of the bladder (TURB). In the study, 263 patients with HG T1 disease at initial TURB and no residual tumor at re-TURB were randomized to either surveillance or an 8-wk BCG induction course without maintenance.
European Urology published a clinical update in Research Highlights on 20 Mar 2026.
