It is a very rare, once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to be recruited to serve as inaugural Editor-in-Chief of a brand-new major medical journal. Despite the daunting challenges of birthing a new journal devoted to clinical cardiovascular science in the scrum of the large number of competing cardiology journals (including the leading journals sponsored by the 3 large cardiovascular societies), I accepted the offer to serve as Editor of JAMA Cardiology and join the family of journals in the JAMA Network. I was attracted by the quality and experience of the JAMA editors and editorial and publication staff, which made me confident that this new initiative at this stage of my career would be a success.
