Reynolds’ scientist Claude Teague acknowledged in a previously confidential 1982 tobacco industry document, “Most of those who have smoked for any significant time would like to stop.” And he asserted “… we cannot ever be comfortable selling a product which most of our customers would stop using if they could. That is to say, if the exit gate from our market should suddenly open, we could be out of business almost overnight.”
