Sepsis accounts for around a third of global deaths, with an estimated 166 million cases and 21·4 million all-cause sepsis-related deaths according to a recent study from the Global Sepsis Collaborators, using GBD data up to 2021. Furthermore, the WHO estimates that around half of global cases are seen in children younger than 5 years of age with substantially higher mortality, in both children and adults, seen in low-resource settings. Recent updates to the Surviving Sepsis Campaign guidelines for adults and children with sepsis or septic shock, launched at the 2026 Society of Critical Care Medicine (SCCM) meeting in March, are therefore welcome.
