NORTHRIDGE, Calif., May 18, 2026 — More than half a million pounds of fresh fruits and vegetables have been distributed free of charge to the San Fernando Valley community through a monthly produce distribution program, which has concluded after four successful years. The American Heart Association, with support from sponsor Dignity Health Northridge Regional Medical Center, initiated the distribution in July 2021 to help address food insecurity, particularly in the wake of the COVID 19 pandemic. The effort was part of a larger initiative to improve nutrition security and promote healthier eating habits within the Los Angeles County community. “We started with the goal of serving 150 families at each event and the program quickly expanded to support 400 families monthly. We’re proud to have served more than 18,000 individuals and their families over the last four years,” said Jeremy Zoch, president of Dignity Health’s Northridge Hospital Medical Center. “This program exemplifies the power of collaboration in addressing community health challenges and making a lasting, positive impact.” Over four years, more than 2,600 volunteers, mostly hospital staff, worked to sort, pack and distribute over 573,000 pounds of fresh produce, equivalent to about 3,000 meals. On special occasions, such as Thanksgiving and the December holidays, the distribution included essential staples like turkeys, hams, Cornish game hens and pumpkins. Dignity Health is a local sponsor of the American Heart Association’s Live Fierce Reduce. Your Risk. campaign designed to bring lifesaving information and resources to support the community’s heart and brain health.
