National Nurses United backs Dr. Adam Hamawy in New Jersey’s 12th District

National Nurses United has endorsed Dr. Adam Hamawy for New Jersey’s 12th Congressional District, saying the doctor and veteran has spent his life serving others and is prepared to take on billionaires and special interests in Congress on behalf of working people.

The union, which says it represents more than 225,000 registered nurses nationwide, announced the endorsement in a May 28 press release. NNU described Hamawy as someone who has built his career around service both in the United States and abroad.

“Dr. Hamawy embodies the best of the American story,” said NNU President Jamie Brown, RN. Brown said Hamawy grew up in a working-class immigrant family and has used his skills to help others, including treating the injured in a field hospital at Ground Zero after September 11, serving as a combat trauma surgeon in Iraq, and working medical missions in Gaza. Brown said nurses are proud to support Hamawy as he brings nurses’ values of caring, compassion and community to Congress.

Hamawy said he was honored to receive the endorsement from National Nurses United. He said nurses are the backbone of the health care system and strong advocates for working families. He also said he has worked with nurses throughout his career in hospitals and appreciates that they are represented by a strong union such as NNU.

“Every worker deserves a union,” Hamawy said. He added that he looks forward to fighting alongside NNU to bring Medicare for All and quality, affordable health care to every New Jersey family.

NNU said it supports candidates who share nurses’ values, including safe patient staffing in hospitals, protecting workers’ rights to organize, and guaranteeing health care for everyone. The union also pointed to a recent Gallup poll in which nurses were named the most trusted profession in the United States for the 24th consecutive year.

The release said NNU looks forward to helping elect Hamawy and working with him in Congress on issues affecting registered nurses, patients and communities. The organization also described itself as the largest and fastest-growing union and professional association of registered nurses in the country, with affiliates including the California Nurses Association/National Nurses Organizing Committee, DC Nurses Association, Michigan Nurses Association, Minnesota Nurses Association and New York State Nurses Association.
