In Reply Clonal hematopoiesis of indeterminate potential (CHIP) is a molecularly defined blood cancer precursor with a well-established set of causes and consequences. Large-scale epidemiologic studies consistently identify age, sex, cytotoxic therapy, and germline genetic variation as the primary causes of CHIP. Importantly, although CHIP is a potent risk factor for multiple forms of cardiovascular disease (CVD), the relationship is unidirectional: CVD and traditional cardiometabolic risk factors, including diabetes, obesity, hypertension, and vascular inflammation do not cause CHIP.
