Marcus D. Goncalves, MD, PhD, has been named director of NYU Langone’s Holman Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism, succeeding Ira J. Goldberg, MD.
Dr. Marcus D. Goncalves has assumed the role of director for the Holman Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism at NYU Langone Health. He fills the position previously held by Dr. Ira J. Goldberg, who has been leading the division since 2014 and will continue his involvement as a faculty member.
Dr. Goncalves joined NYU Langone in 2024, coming from Weill Cornell Medicine and New York-Presbyterian Hospital. In addition to his role as director, he holds the position of Clarissa and Edgar Bronfman, Jr., associate professor of endocrinology and leads the Systemic Metabolism Research within the Department of Medicine at NYU Grossman School of Medicine. Furthermore, he is also an associate professor in the Department of Radiation Oncology.
A prominent figure in endocrinology, Goncalves is recognized nationally for his work as a physician-scientist. He spearheads a comprehensive research program focused on the interaction between metabolism, cancer, and endocrine signaling. His research contributes significantly to understanding various health issues, including cachexia, obesity, and insulin resistance, along with the metabolic impacts of dietary sugars, particularly fructose. His dedication lies in translating scientific discoveries to enhance patient care.
In his new role, Goncalves will oversee the clinical, research, and educational priorities of the division. Key aims include bolstering NYU Langone’s extensive programs addressing diabetes, thyroid disorders, and pituitary diseases. He also plans to expand initiatives related to bone health, obesity management, and cancer-associated cachexia, while aiming to increase the number of clinical trials, both investigator-initiated and sponsored by industry, to accelerate the development of new therapies.
Expressing his enthusiasm for the position, Goncalves stated, "I am honored to lead the division and to build on the extraordinary foundation established by Dr. Goldberg and our faculty." He emphasized a commitment to delivering the best scientific advancements to patients through innovative trials and collaboration sought to achieve better health outcomes.
