An innovative outreach project has emerged in the West of England, aimed at providing crucial dental care to street sex workers. Spearheaded by the Gloucestershire charity Bridge2Aid in collaboration with Bristol Dental School (BDS), the initiative offers these women a vital service that many have previously found inaccessible.
According to practitioners involved, many women who engage in street sex work often lack a fixed address or income, making it challenging to seek out medical care. The initiative aims to dismantle the barriers that prevent them from visiting a dentist. Shaenna Loughnane, chief executive of Bridge2Aid, highlighted that several of these women have faced trauma to their faces and mouths and often feel judged when accessing dental services.
One participant, identified only as Karen, shared her experience saying, "They were so kind, they took their time, and it felt safe." BDS described the program as the first of its kind in the UK, specifically tailored to address the needs of street sex workers.
The chaotic lifestyle associated with street sex work presents various difficulties in maintaining appointments. Karen mentioned that unusual working hours and challenges such as addiction often complicate their ability to seek dental services. "If you haven't had your drugs, you're not going to get there and a lot of people are very judgmental about that," she explained.
Dental students participating in the program have reported gaining valuable insights into the specific healthcare barriers that street sex workers face. One student noted the surprising realization that some women lack access to clean water, a fundamental aspect of oral hygiene. Recognizing these challenges, students are encouraged to consider lifestyle factors when planning care, such as scheduling appointments during the afternoon.
Shaenna emphasized the importance of creating a welcoming environment for these women. Many feel unwelcome as soon as they walk into traditional dental practices. After initial visits, the hope is that they will feel confident enough to pursue further care. The program has received overwhelmingly positive feedback, with every woman surveyed reporting that they felt treated with dignity and respect during their appointments.
Bridge2Aid collaborates closely with One25, another Bristol-based charity dedicated to supporting women involved in street sex work. Rachel Collins-White, head of services at One25, noted that several women have undergone a range of treatments, from x-rays and fillings to extractions and dentures.
Participants in the program, like Emily, who is preparing for extensive treatment, have shared the significance of receiving respectful care. She recounted her struggles with dental health caused by a lack of resources after becoming homeless. "When I first got kicked out of my home, I was in a bed and breakfast and didn’t have access to toothpaste, which led to a severe gum infection," she explained. Now, she feels reassured knowing she will see the same dental student throughout her treatment.
The importance of addressing oral health issues among this demographic cannot be understated. Emily remarked, "To find out that you can get quite severe illnesses from not having proper oral hygiene, and to try and nip that in the bud as early as possible is amazing."
For BDS students, this outreach initiative serves as an opportunity for practical learning while addressing the needs of an underserved population. Phil Loughnane, joint clinical lead at BDS, stated that the program is innovative in its approach, emphasizing that it not only provides treatment but also allows students to engage with community health solutions.
The efforts of this team aim to create a more inclusive healthcare environment, ushering in a model that might inspire similar initiatives across the UK.
With ongoing support from charities like Bridge2Aid and One25, there is hope that more street sex workers will gain access to the dental services they need, thereby improving their overall quality of life and health outcomes.
