Marcus D. Goncalves, MD, PhD, has been appointed as the director of NYU Langone's Holman Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism, succeeding Ira J. Goldberg, MD.
NYU Langone Health has appointed Marcus D. Goncalves, MD, PhD, as the new director of the Holman Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism. Goncalves takes over from Ira J. Goldberg, MD, who has led the division since 2014. Goldberg will remain on the faculty, contributing his expertise to the institution.
Joining NYU Langone in 2024 from Weill Cornell Medicine and New York-Presbyterian Hospital, Goncalves also holds the title of Clarissa and Edgar Bronfman, Jr., associate professor of endocrinology. Additionally, he directs Systemic Metabolism Research in the Department of Medicine at NYU Grossman School of Medicine and serves as an associate professor in the Department of Radiation Oncology. He is recognized nationally as an endocrinologist and physician-scientist, overseeing a significant research program that explores the interplay between metabolism, cancer, and endocrine signaling.
His research has notably advanced the understanding of various health conditions, including cachexia, obesity, and insulin resistance. Goncalves has also focused on studying the metabolic effects of dietary sugars, particularly fructose, while consistently aiming to translate scientific discoveries into improved patient care.
In his new role, Goncalves will manage the division's clinical, research, and educational initiatives. His priorities for the division include bolstering NYU Langone’s extensive programs focused on diabetes, thyroid, and pituitary diseases. He also intends to expand collaborative efforts in areas such as bone health, obesity, and cancer-related cachexia. Furthermore, he aims to enhance the array of clinical trials available, both investigator-initiated and industry-sponsored, to expedite the development of innovative therapies.
