Dr. Samuel Klein, award-winning researcher, discusses his insights into obesity's varied effects on health and the importance of his findings in the field.
Samuel Klein, MD, a recognized leader in obesity research, has dedicated nearly 30 years of his career to exploring why individuals experience obesity differently. Recently honored with the Endocrine Society’s 2026 Outstanding Clinical Investigator Laureate Award, Klein’s work has contributed significantly to understanding the intricate dynamics of fat biology and metabolic risk.
Klein, who serves as the William H. Danforth Professor of Medicine and Nutritional Science at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, Mo., has been delving into the perplexing question of why some people with obesity suffer severe metabolic diseases while others maintain relative health. His extensive research is rooted in rigorous human studies and translational science, redefining clinical approaches and scientific inquiries related to obesity.
The decision to award Klein the honor recognizes his substantial contributions to this field, particularly in helping to elucidate how weight loss can mitigate metabolic issues associated with obesity. "He is a unique physician-scientist who conducts studies in human subjects focused on understanding the pathogenesis and pathophysiology of obesity and diabetes, aiming to enhance health and clinical care,” praised Rexford S. Ahima, MD, PhD, director of the Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, in his recommendation for the award.
In a recent conversation with Endocrine News, Klein elaborated on the implications of his research and shared his insights with prospective scientists.
Receiving the Laureate Recognition Klein expressed his gratitude when informed of his award, emphasizing that this recognition extends beyond individual achievement: "Receiving the Endocrine Society’s Outstanding Clinical Investigator Award is obviously a great honor. I want to acknowledge that this award recognizes the many contributions from research staff, trainees, and colleagues that made the work happen. The Laureate recognition of our work supports the importance of combining clinical and basic science techniques in studying multi-organ system biology in people to enhance our understanding of the pathogenesis of obesity-related metabolic diseases.”
He is optimistic that his research will continue to yield significant insights both in the short and long term.
Short- and Long-term Impact Klein noted that obesity often correlates with various metabolic disturbances and diseases, such as insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes, and liver disorders, which are crucial risk factors for cardiovascular issues. However, he highlighted a notable diversity in these metabolic consequences: "Some individuals with obesity are protected from many adverse effects of excess body fat and can be considered ‘metabolically healthy.’" He asserted that this diversity merits further study.
Klein's aim is to stimulate research focusing on individuals occupying both ends of the metabolic spectrum: those experiencing both metabolically healthy and unhealthy obesity. By understanding the mechanisms at play in these distinct groups, researchers can uncover pathways that may either contribute to or help prevent obesity-related metabolic diseases.
He defined a fundamental principle for researchers: "It is essential to follow the data and not become personally invested in a particular hypothesis. Research is an exploration to find the truth. There is nothing wrong in being wrong, but it’s a mistake to remain locked into a position lacking support from new data."
Advice for Aspiring Scientists When asked for advice for those beginning their research careers, Klein stressed the importance of adaptability and openness to new findings. He encouraged prospective scientists to maintain a flexible approach in their research endeavors, suggesting that maintaining a strong connection with evolving data is crucial.
If given the chance to revisit the early years of his career, Klein reflected: "I would have spent less time at work and more time developing hobbies that I could pursue in retirement.”
Balancing Work and Life Acknowledging science's demanding nature, Klein shared his preferred forms of relaxation when not immersed in research. He enjoys exercising and reading true crime novels as a way to unwind and decompress from the rigors of scientific work.
