Vermont has opted out of federal physician supervision requirements for certified registered nurse anesthetists, allowing them to provide anesthesia care without physician oversight.
Certified registered nurse anesthetists in Vermont can now provide anesthesia care without physician supervision after the state opted out of federal supervision requirements. In a July 2 letter, Vermont Gov. Phil Scott notified CMS of the decision, according to a July 9 news release from the American Association of Nurse Anesthesiology.
The move makes Vermont the 26th state to opt out, the association said. No additional details about how the change will affect care delivery were reported in the source.
AANA President Jeff Molter said in the release that increased patient demand, limited resources and Vermont’s rural healthcare challenges call for a system that can meet residents’ needs. He said the opt-out letter has accomplished that goal.
