AAPI Honors Dr. Navin C. Shah with Lifetime Achievement Award

The American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin (AAPI) has awarded its esteemed Lifetime Achievement Award to Dr. Navin C. Shah, a prominent urologist based in Maryland. This recognition honors Shah for his decades-long leadership and advocacy on behalf of Indian American physicians, as well as his contributions to global healthcare initiatives. The Lifetime Achievement Award is among the highest honors conferred by AAPI, aimed at recognizing members who exhibit outstanding vision and commitment to the organization.

Growing up in Pune, India, Dr. Shah graduated from BJ Medical College. He became an influential figure in the fight against the discrimination faced by physicians who obtained medical degrees outside the United States. His advocacy played a crucial role in the passage of federal legislation in 1992 that enhanced equality for foreign medical graduates (FMGs).

In a statement following the award ceremony, Dr. Shah expressed his gratitude to AAPI's leadership, reflecting on its origins with fond memories. He shared, "As president of the Indian Medical Association (Washington, DC) in 1981, I reached out through the Indian Embassy's newspaper, India News, urging all Indian medical associations to unite and establish a national body for physicians of Indian origin." This outreach was instrumental in the founding of AAPI in 1982, which set out with dual goals: combating discrimination against FMGs in the U.S. and enhancing healthcare and medical education in India.

As one of AAPI's founders and its second president, Shah worked tirelessly to forge a coalition among foreign-trained physicians from over 100 countries to advocate for equitable treatment in the healthcare system. He noted, "Once I realized the extensive discrimination against FMGs, particularly Indians, I sought to unite various national groups under one banner."

Dr. Shah's efforts culminated in significant victories, including lobbying for equality in Congress, which led to the passage of an equality bill endorsed by President George H.W. Bush in March 1992.

Furthermore, under his leadership as AAPI president and education director, Shah initiated various medical education programs in India, including trauma care training for surgeons, initiatives focused on infectious diseases, and contributions of medical equipment to hospitals in India. Over the years, he has collaborated with various Indian government leaders and healthcare officials to bolster medical education and patient care.

Shah's contemporary efforts include prostate cancer screening initiatives and fostering partnerships between medical institutions in the U.S. and India, including collaborations with BJ Medical College in Pune.
