Deloitte’s Physician Leadership Academy aims to equip advanced physician leaders with essential skills for enterprise leadership, focusing on strategy, team management, and organizational growth.
Deloitte’s Physician Leadership Academy (PLA) has been creating pathways for physicians to advance their leadership roles within healthcare organizations. As the healthcare sector evolves, doctors are increasingly called to take on roles that extend beyond the clinical setting. The PLA is meticulously crafted to provide the necessary tools and knowledge for this transition, addressing the gap between clinical expertise and leadership capabilities.
Now in its ninth year, the PLA emphasizes training and development for high-potential physician leaders. The program aims to cultivate the skills required for success in broad-ranging roles that align with the demands of the modern healthcare landscape. As a pioneering effort by Deloitte Consulting LLP, the academy has successfully graduated over 125 physician leaders who are now confidently navigating the complexities of healthcare management.
Applications for the upcoming 2026–27 cohort are currently open, inviting advanced physician leaders who are ready to redefine their approach to leadership. The program prepares participants to meet the challenges of rising healthcare costs, shifting patient expectations, and the increasing integration of AI technologies in healthcare delivery.
The PLA equips participants to lead innovative initiatives and influence change within their organizations. Participating physicians are expected to make a commitment to the program, which includes attending all in-person modules and engaging in additional training connected to the core curriculum.
The structure of the program is comprehensive and involves several key components designed to build both theoretical knowledge and practical skills. To start, participants undergo leadership evaluations that allow for the identification of personal growth opportunities in professional environments. Each physician will engage in one-on-one coaching, interactive learning modules taught by esteemed faculty and Deloitte leaders, and practical applications through self-selected leadership challenges.
The program is divided into three major in-person modules: the first is scheduled from September 28-30, 2026, at Deloitte University in Westlake, Texas; the second will occur on January 25-26, 2027, at a yet-to-be-disclosed location; and the last module will return to Deloitte University from April 13-15, 2027. In addition, there will be virtual inter-module connections that involve 2-3 hours of engagement in October and November of 2026, as well as March 2027. Specific dates and topics for these virtual sessions are still to be confirmed.
Upon completion of the academy, participants will possess the skills necessary to define and communicate a clear purpose as leaders in both enterprise and marketplace contexts. They will also learn how to develop visionary strategies and execute them effectively, fostering an innovative mindset to adapt to ongoing policy and industry changes. Participants will be trained to lead their teams through organizational changes using versatile approaches while effectively managing relationships with stakeholders and building social capital. Moreover, the program fosters an enterprise mindset that integrates strategy, influence, collaboration, and a holistic understanding of healthcare systems.
Feedback from recent graduates emphasizes the transformative nature of the PLA. For many, the program has not only improved their capabilities as healthcare providers and leaders but has also enhanced their personal growth. As articulated by a graduate, "It exceeded all of my expectations. The combination of Deloitte’s healthcare expertise with insights from top business leaders and peer interactions has been remarkable."
Another participant highlighted the unique value of the program, stating that it provided essential skills typically lacking in traditional medical training. Insights gained have empowered them to navigate complex organizational challenges, cultivated networking opportunities, and fostered valuable time for personal reflection.
The PLA's objective resonates strongly with the evolving demands of healthcare leaders, who must be agile and equipped with new competencies to tackle industry challenges. According to Kenneth J. Abrams, MD, MBA, Chief Medical Director at Deloitte Consulting LLP, the program is essential for existing physician leaders to meet the ongoing shifts in healthcare and to enhance community health outcomes.
For those interested in elevating their leadership capacity, attendance at the Physician Leadership Academy represents a significant opportunity to expand professional horizons and become a driving force in healthcare innovation and transformation. Interested candidates are encouraged to apply soon, as the program continues to gain recognition as a vital resource for future leaders in the health sector.
