Flourish Health, a provider focused on improving mental healthcare for youth, has announced the successful completion of a $26 million Series A funding round. This investment, led by B Capital, F-Prime, and Cherryrock Capital, aims to help the company scale its unique care model designed to address the pressing mental health needs of children and young adults.
Despite rising awareness, only 20% of children experiencing mental, emotional, or behavioral health disorders receive specialized care, as reported by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Flourish Health was established in 2022 by founders Natalia Birgisson, M.D., John Haskell, and Josh Gachang to fill this significant gap in the healthcare landscape.
Dr. Birgisson, who serves as the CEO, draws from her firsthand experiences in pediatric emergency rooms, where she witnessed the devastating effects of inadequate mental health support for children. In her words, the urgent need for effective care was crystallized after losing a young patient to suicide, inspiring her to create a solution that would better serve children and their families in crisis.
Flourish Health employs an in-home care model that focuses on children and young adults with severe mental health needs, such as depression, anxiety, and trauma-related disorders. The company emphasizes the importance of a holistic approach to treatment, striving to reduce the rates of hospitalization and the necessity for residential care. According to Flourish Health, its services have produced significant outcomes, with reductions in hospitalizations ranging from 70% to 96% and decreases in residential treatment of 69% to 90%.
The company's innovative Care Pods consist of a multidisciplinary team including a psychiatrist, a licensed therapist, a patient guide, and a family guide. These teams are supported by a technology platform designed to mitigate administrative burdens, allowing providers to concentrate on patient care. Sharon Epps, Director of Family Guides at Flourish Health, emphasizes the creation of a community-like environment for families entering its care, underlining the importance of connection throughout the treatment process.
Flourish Health's efforts are already bearing fruit, with growth reported at threefold year-over-year since launching patient care in 2023. The company's services are operational in 10 states, and the team has noted an increase in referrals from detention centers and transitional homes, reflecting a recognition of the need for better mental health support in these environments.
Birgisson explained that their model allows for flexibility in patient engagement, including activities such as school advocacy and life coaching, which help integrate care among different systems that support youth. The company aims to address the reality faced by many families in care deserts, where access to in-person services is limited.
With the newly secured funding, Flourish Health plans to further its national expansion, collaborating with major health plans across the country. The primary goal of this investment is not only to widen their reach but also to enhance the tools and technologies that support its operational model. As Birgisson points out, being ahead in terms of platform developments is vital for maintaining a strong support system for families.
The advanced technology capabilities aim to streamline workflows for Care Pods by integrating patient interactions, electronic medical records, prescribing functions, and team collaboration tools. “Intensive mental healthcare poses significant challenges,” stated Brett Cook, a partner at F-Prime, “but Flourish Health's clinical product fosters team alignment, making it effective at scale.”
