Clade Ib of the mpox virus has emerged and spread beyond Africa, prompting urgent public health concerns and discussions about preparedness.
Mpox, resulting from the monkeypox virus, is categorized into clades I and II. Clade I comprises subclades Ia and Ib, while clade II encompasses subclades IIa and IIb. In 2022, non-travel-related mpox cases were detected in various countries, indicating the spread of clade IIb in non-endemic regions, notably among gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (MSM). This led the World Health Organization (WHO) to declare a public health emergency of international concern (PHEIC). In the subsequent year, clade Ib emerged in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, spreading to adjacent nations and prompting the declaration of another PHEIC.
