Recent trials have changed treatment approaches for muscle-invasive bladder cancer, incorporating immune checkpoint inhibitors alongside traditional therapies.
Neoadjuvant therapy based on cisplatin has traditionally been the standard treatment for muscle-invasive bladder cancer. Over the last five years, several significant trials have facilitated the integration of immune checkpoint inhibitors into this treatment paradigm. Notably, the phase 3 NIAGARA trial resulted in the approval of durvalumab when used in conjunction with gemcitabine or cisplatin, followed by adjuvant monotherapy with immune checkpoint inhibitors. Furthermore, the CheckMate-274 and AMBASSADOR trials highlighted enhanced outcomes for those receiving these adjuvant therapies.
