At ChristianaCare in Newark, Del., hospital-based acute care physicians represented by Doctors Council SEIU voted June 30 to ratify a new three-year labor contract. In Philadelphia, nurses at Jefferson Einstein Philadelphia Hospital, represented by Einstein Nurses United, also voted June 24 to approve a new three-year agreement.
Several groups were preparing for strikes in early July. Members of SEIU Healthcare Minnesota & Iowa planned to strike July 6 outside Abbott Northwestern Hospital and Allina Health’s corporate headquarters in Minneapolis. Also on July 6, members of National Nurses United were planning one-day strikes at Ascension Via Christi St. Francis and St. Joseph hospitals in Wichita, Kan., and at Ascension St. Agnes Hospital in Baltimore.
In Massachusetts, about 4,500 registered nurses and clinicians at Mass General Brigham in Somerville planned to strike July 8. According to the Massachusetts Nurses Association, that action would be the largest healthcare strike in the state’s history.
Other labor actions were scheduled for earlier in July. Skilled maintenance workers employed by MedSpace Services planned to strike July 2 at six Illinois hospitals owned by Ontario, Calif.-based Prime Healthcare. Members of the Michigan Nurses Association were set to begin a three-day strike July 3 at MyMichigan Medical Center Alma, which is part of Midland-based MyMichigan Health.
Union activity also continued at several other institutions. Physicians, nurse practitioners and physician assistants at Phoenix-based Banner Health filed a petition for union representation with the Union of American Physicians and Dentists on June 22. Registered nurses at St. Mary of Nazareth Hospital in Chicago voted June 17 to join the National Nurses Organizing Committee, an affiliate of National Nurses United.
In the Pacific Northwest, 250 advanced practice providers across Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center, the University of Washington and Seattle Children’s Hospital are seeking to join the Union of American Physicians and Dentists. Separately, nearly 900 registered nurses at SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital in Madison, Wis., voted June 11 to unionize.
