National Nurses United condemned the killing of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo by ICE and renewed its call for the agency’s abolition. The union said the violence endangers communities and nurses.
National Nurses United (NNU), the largest union of registered nurses in the United States, said it is condemning the killing of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo by Immigration and Customs Enforcement, or ICE. In the union’s statement, NNU said the only way forward on what it described as fascist authoritarian violence is the abolition of ICE.
Puneet Maharaj, NNU’s executive director, said ICE has continued to operate with deadly force and apparent complete impunity despite mass calls for its abolition. Maharaj said the agency’s ongoing campaign of lethal violence against everyday people is needlessly ending lives, causing harm, and endangering and terrifying the communities where people live, work, and care for patients.
The statement said a GoFundMe has been established to support Araujo’s family. No additional details about the circumstances of his killing were reported in the source.
NNU also said the Trump administration continues to spread terror in communities by targeting innocent people of color and criminalizing dissent. The union pointed to federal charges against anti-ICE protesters in Minnesota, sentencing of protesters and activists in Texas, and raids on the offices of nonprofit organizations in Ohio. According to the statement, these coordinated attacks are aimed at undermining democracy and stripping away freedoms.
The union said nurses are committed to building the solidarity needed to protect patients and communities from what it described as escalating attacks by officials under the Trump administration.
NNU said it has consistently called for ICE’s abolition, and that nurses have taken several actions to demand an end to what it called a campaign of community harassment and endangerment.
National Nurses United represents more than 225,000 nurses across the nation and advocates for policies and legislation that improve the lives of nurses and communities everywhere. The organization says it is the largest and fastest-growing union and professional association of registered nurses in the United States, with affiliates including the California Nurses Association/National Nurses Organizing Committee, DC Nurses Association, Michigan Nurses Association, Minnesota Nurses Association, and New York State Nurses Association.
