Asthma, an inflammatory disorder of the lower airways, affects 260 million people worldwide.1 The condition is characterised by variable airflow limitation, respiratory symptoms, and episodic exacerbations often resulting from pulmonary infections and/or aeroallergen exposures. The mainstay of asthma treatment is inhaled corticosteroids combined with a long-acting β2-agonist (ICS–LABA).2 However, one in three patients have uncontrolled asthma or impaired lung function despite medium-dose ICS-LABA (Global Initiative for Asthma [GINA] Step 4).
